Solution Focused Brief Therapy, also known as SFBT, is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on building solutions rather than analyzing problems. Developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, SFBT has grown into one of the most widely practiced therapeutic approaches in the world.
Rather than spending extensive time exploring the origins of problems or examining the past in detail, SFBT concentrates on where you want to go and how to get there. It is grounded in the belief that you already have the strengths, resources, and abilities needed to create change in your life, and that therapy is most effective when it helps you identify and build on what is already working.

SFBT works by shifting the focus of conversation from problems to possibilities. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to develop a clear vision of how you would like your life to be different and to identify the strengths and resources you already have that can help you get there.
A key part of this process involves exploring exceptions, times in your life when the problem was less present or when you successfully coped with a difficult situation. By identifying what worked in those moments, your therapist helps you build on existing successes and apply them more consistently going forward.
SFBT uses carefully crafted questions to help you think differently about your situation and clarify your goals. Common techniques include:
The miracle question, which invites you to imagine how your life would look if the problem were resolved, helping to clarify what you are working toward
Scaling questions, which help you track progress and identify small but meaningful steps forward
Coping questions, which help you recognize your own resilience and the ways you are already managing difficult situations
Exception questions, which explore times when things have gone better and what made that possible
At Insightful Journey every one of our therapists incorporates SFBT principles into their work, reflecting our shared belief in the strengths and resilience of every client we see.

SFBT sessions at Insightful Journey are collaborative, strengths-based, and forward-focused. Your therapist will spend time understanding what you want to be different and will work with you to identify the resources and steps that can help you get there.
Sessions are conversational and respectful, with your therapist asking questions that help you discover your own insights and solutions rather than providing answers or telling you what to do. Many clients find this approach empowering and refreshing, particularly if they have felt stuck or overwhelmed by previous attempts to address their concerns.
SFBT is often shorter in duration than other therapeutic approaches, though the length of treatment always depends on your individual needs and goals.
SFBT can be a powerful tool for anyone who wants to move forward in their life, build on their existing strengths, and develop practical solutions to the challenges they are facing. If you are curious about whether SFBT might be a good fit for you, we encourage you to bring it up during your free 15-minute consultation or discuss it with your therapist. Together you can explore whether SFBT aligns with your needs and goals.
