Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

What is EFT?

Emotionally Focused Therapy, commonly known as EFT, is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on the role of emotions in shaping our experiences, relationships, and sense of self. Developed in the 1980s by Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. Les Greenberg, EFT is grounded in attachment theory and the understanding that our emotional bonds with others are fundamental to our wellbeing.

EFT helps clients identify, understand, and reshape emotional responses that may be keeping them stuck, disconnected, or in pain. By working directly with emotions rather than around them, EFT creates deep and lasting change that goes beyond surface level symptom relief.

How does EFT work?

EFT works by helping you access and understand the deeper emotions that drive your thoughts, behaviors, and relationship patterns. Often the emotions that show up on the surface, such as anger, withdrawal, or criticism, are protecting more vulnerable feelings underneath, such as fear, loneliness, or shame.

Your therapist will create a safe, supportive space where you can explore these deeper emotions, understand where they come from, and begin to reshape the patterns they create. This process helps you develop a more secure relationship with yourself and with the people who matter most to you.

EFT is typically delivered in three stages. The first stage focuses on identifying and de-escalating negative emotional cycles. The second stage involves accessing and reshaping the underlying emotional experiences driving those cycles. The third stage focuses on consolidating new patterns and building a stronger, more secure foundation going forward.

At Insightful Journey our therapists personalize the EFT approach to meet your unique needs, ensuring the process feels safe, meaningful, and relevant to your specific situation and goals.

What Can EFT Help With?

EFT has been shown to be effective for a wide range of concerns including:

  • Relationship difficulties and conflict

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Grief and loss

  • Low self-esteem and shame

  • Attachment difficulties

  • Life transitions and adjustment difficulties

  • Emotional disconnection

  • Communication difficulties

  • Couples and relationship distress

What Does an EFT Session Look Like?

EFT sessions at Insightful Journey are warm, collaborative, and emotionally focused. Your therapist will help you slow down and tune in to your emotional experience, exploring what you are feeling beneath the surface and what those feelings are telling you about your needs and values.

Sessions involve a combination of conversation, emotional exploration, and experiential exercises designed to help you access and reshape your emotional responses. Many clients find that EFT helps them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships, and creates a sense of relief and connection that other approaches had not been able to reach.
