Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, commonly known as DBT, is an evidence-based therapeutic approach originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder. Since its development it has been shown to be highly effective for a wide range of mental health concerns, particularly those involving intense emotions, self-destructive behaviors, and relationship difficulties.

The word "dialectical" refers to the balance between two seemingly opposite ideas, acceptance and change. DBT helps clients learn to accept themselves and their experiences as they are in the present moment, while also developing the skills needed to create meaningful change in their lives.

How Does DBT Work?

DBT is a skills-based approach that teaches practical tools across four core areas:

Mindfulness: the foundation of DBT, mindfulness helps you develop awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in the present moment without judgment. This awareness creates space to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

Distress Tolerance: these skills help you cope with difficult emotions and crisis situations without making things worse. Rather than avoiding or escaping distress, distress tolerance skills help you get through painful moments in a healthy way.

Emotion Regulation: these skills help you understand and manage intense emotions more effectively, reducing vulnerability to emotional overwhelm and building a more stable emotional foundation.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: these skills help you navigate relationships, communicate your needs clearly, set healthy boundaries, and maintain self-respect in your interactions with others.

At Insightful Journey our therapists personalize the DBT approach to meet your unique needs, drawing from these four skill areas in a way that feels relevant and meaningful to your specific situation and goals.

What Can DBT Help With?

DBT has been shown to be effective for a wide range of concerns including:

  • Intense or overwhelming emotions

  • Self-harm and suicidal ideation

  • Depression and mood disorders

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Eating disorders

  • Substance use and addiction

What Does a DBT Session Look Like?

DBT sessions at Insightful Journey focus on building skills and applying them to real situations in your life. Your therapist will work with you to identify which skill areas are most relevant to your needs and help you practice and integrate them over time.

Sessions are collaborative and practical. Your therapist will help you explore situations that have been challenging, identify which skills could have been helpful, and develop a plan for applying those skills going forward. Many clients find that DBT gives them a concrete toolkit they can draw from in difficult moments both in and outside of sessions.
